Passenger car registrations in the EU: +1.4% in July, -8.4% August, -3.2% in eight months

Passenger car market in the EU slightly expanded in July (+1.4%), totaling nearly 1.3 million units overall (1,294,506). The positive result was supported by Germany (+4.7%) and by the Central European countries, while Spain (-11.1%), UK (-4.1%) and France (-1.8%) decreased and Italy remained stable (+0.1%, with 153,116 units sold, only 167 more than July 2018).

Demand fell in August with a significant -8.4%, a number which must be read partly as a result of the comparison with the exceptional growth recorded in August 2018 (pushed by the introduction of the new WLTP test the following month). All main national markets declined: Spain -30.8%; France -14.1%; Italy -3.8% (with 88,939 registrations, over 2.8 thousand less than in August 2018); UK -1.6%; Germany -0.8%.

Eight months into the year, passenger car registrations declined by 3.2%, with 10.5 million units in the EU (10,520,238). Germany posted a small growth (+0.8%), while all other markets slowed down: Spain -9.2%; UK -3.4%; France -3.0%; Italy -3.0% (with 1,325,162 cars registered, over 41 thousand less compared to the same period last year).
