European passenger car market: -10.4% in July, +4.4 in August and -11.9% in eight months

After thirteen months of consecutive decline and a sharp -10.4% in July, passenger car registrations in EU are growing again in August, with +4.4% compared to last year and 650,305 units sold overall.

Good results come from all main European national markets, first of all Italy (+9.9%, with 71,190 registrations, about 6.4 thousand more than in August 2021), followed closely by Spain (+9.1%), then France (+3.8%) and Germany (+3.0%).

Considering the eight-month period from January to August, demand for new passenger cars fell by 11.9%, totaling nearly 6 million units (5,996,638). Amongst the biggest markets, from the beginning of 2022 Italy posted the worst performance (-18.4%, with 865.044 vehicles, 195.3 thousand less compared to the same period last year), followed by France (-13.8%), Germany (-9.8%) and Spain (-9.4%).
