European car registrations: +5.8% in December, +1.8% over 2025

The European car market ended the year on a positive note, with registrations in December up 5.8%, marking the sixth consecutive month of growth and a total of 963,319 new cars registered.

Among the major national markets, Germany posted a considerable increase (+9.7%), followed by Italy (+2.3%, with 108,075 registrations, around 2,400 more than in December 2024). Spain (-2.2%) and France (-5.8%) lost ground over the same month.

Overall, 2025 closed positively for the European car market, with demand rising by 1.8% and a total of 10,822,831 new registrations across Europe. Spain stood out with the strongest year-on-year performance (+12.9%), followed at a distance by Germany (+1.4%). France remained in negative territory (-5.0%), as did Italy (-2.1%, with 1,524,843 vehicles registered, around 33,200 fewer than in 2024).

Looking at different powertrain types, hybrid vehicles remained firmly the first choice with a 34.5% market share, followed by petrol cars (26.6%), electric cars (17.4%), plug-in hybrids (9.4%) and diesel vehicles (8.9%).
