European commercial vehicle market: -4.0% in December, +3.2% in 2018

In December 2018, demand for new commercial vehicles in the EU declined by 4.0%, with 198,537 units overall. Looking at the main markets, Spain and France posted growth (respectively +6.7% and +1.9%), while sales contracted in Germany (-4.4%), UK (-9.5%) and Italy (-12.1%, with 23,106 vehicles registered, over 3 thousand less than in December 2017).

Heavy trucks and trucks recorded a negative performance (with -12.9% and -11.6%), as a consequence of the bad results of all major markets except for France. Also bus and coach segment marked a double digit decline (-13.6%), while light commercial vehicles registrations declined by 2.4%.

During the year, commercial vehicle registrations increased by 3.2%, growing for the sixth year in a row, with nearly 2.5 million units overall (2,484,715). Spain posted the highest result (+6.5%), followed by France (+4.9%) and Germany (+4.6%), while market contracted in UK (-1.9%) and Italy (+4.1%, with 211,756 units, over 9 thousand less than in 2017).
