European passenger car market: -11.2% in May, -13.7% in five months

Demand for new passenger cars in Europe kept contracting in May, posting -11.2% and totaling 791,546 units sold.

Looking at the main national markets, Italy recorded the heaviest drop (-15.1%, with 121,299 registrations, about 21.6 thousand less than in May 2021), followed by Spain (-10.9%), Germany (-10.2%) and France (-10.1%).

Five months into the year, passenger car registrations in EU went down by 13.7%, totaling 3,721,744 units. From January to May, Italy posted the worst performance (-24.3%, with 556,974 registrations, nearly 178.5 thousand less than in the same period last year), followed by France (-16.9%), Spain (-11.5%) and Germany (-9.3%).
