Passenger car registrations in EU: +28.8% in March, +17.9% in the first quarter

European passenger car market increased by 28.8% in March, with 1,087,939 units overall, marking the eighth consecutive month of growth.

All four biggest national markets posted double digit figures: Spain +66.1%; Italy +40.7% (with 168,259 registrations, nearly 49 thousand more than one year ago); France +24.2%; Germany +16.6%.

From January to March 2023, demand for new passenger cars in Europe expanded by 17.9%, totaling 2,650,711 units. Looking at the main markets, Spain led the growth (+44.5%), followed by Italy (+26.2%, with 427,067 registrations, about 88.7 thousand over the same period last year), France (+15.2%) and Germany (+6.5%).

With an eye to the different fuel types, hybrid car sales increased by 24.3% and battery electric by 13.9% in March, while petrol still represents the largest part of the market with 37.5%.
