Passenger car registrations in EU: +53.4% in May, +29.5% in five months

European car market kept expanding in May, with 891,665 units sold, +53.4% compared to May 2020. Among the biggest national markets, Spain led the growth (+177.8%), followed by France (+46.4%), Italy (+43.0%, with 142,730 registrations, nearly 43 thousand more than one year ago) and Germany (+37.2%).

From January to May, demand for new passenger cars in Europe increased by 29.5%, reaching 4,314,264 units, almost one million more compared to the first five months of 2020. Looking at the four main markets, Italy posted the best performance (+62.8%, with 735,125 units, about 283,5 thousand over the same period last year), followed by France (+50.1%), Spain (+40.0%) and Germany +12.8%).
