European car market: +1.3% in April, -1.2% over the first four months

The European car market saw a modest recovery in April, with registrations increasing by 1.3%, totalling 925,359 units.

Among the major markets, Spain performed best with a +7.1% rise, followed by France (+5.6%) and Italy (+2.7%, with 139,142 new registrations – almost 3,700 more than in April 2024). Germany remained stable with a slight decline of -0.2%.

Overall, the first four months of the year closed with a negative result (-1.2%), amounting to 3,640,211 new car registrations across Europe. Spain showed a positive trend, the only major market to grow during this period (+12.2%), while France (-7.3%), Germany (-3.3%) and Italy (-0.6%, with 583,221 units – roughly 3,500 fewer than the same period last year) all recorded declines.

Hybrids continue to lead the market with a 35.3% share, followed by petrol (28.6%), electric (15.3%) and diesel (9.6%).
