In August, car registrations in Europe plummeted with a significant -18.3%, corresponding to a total of 643,637 units, with substantial losses across all key markets: Germany -27.8%; France -24.3%; Italy -13.4% (equivalent to 69,161 registered vehicles, over 10,600 less than in August 2023); Spain -6.5%.
In the first eight months of the year, the growth in new car sales in Europe shrank to a modest +1.4%, with nearly 7.2 million units sold. Among the four major markets, Spain performed the best (+4.5%), followed by Italy (+3.8%, with 1,080.726 units, nearly 40k over the same period last year), while France and Germany stagnated (respectively -0.5% and -0.3%).
Regarding different types of vehicles, petrol continues to be the top choice (33.1% of the market), with hybrids in second place (31.3%) and electric vehicles third (14.4%).
