European passenger car market: -7.8% in October, -26.8% in ten months

After the positive result recorded in September, demand for new passenger cars fell by 7.8% in October, totaling 953,615 units overall in the EU, as a consequence of the new restrictions imposed by European national governments to contain the spread of Covid-19 virus.

Among the biggest markets, Spain posted the lowest numbers (-21.0%), followed by France (-9.5%) and Germany (-3.6%), while Italy showed no significant change (-0.2%, with 156,978 cars sold).

Ten months into the year, registrations dropped by 26.8%, counting 8,011,490 units, nearly 3 million less than in 2019. Looking at the main national markets, Spain recorded the worst performance (-36.8%), followed by Italy (-30.9%, with 1,123,194 registrations, over 500 thousand less compared to the same period last year), France (-26.9%) and Germany (-23.4%).
